Game idea and missions

If we want to see men living on the moon a lot of problems will need to be solved.

To solve these problems many studies and discoveries have to be done. The game represents some of the possible investigations of this sense. In the game there is a greenhouse where plants growth on the moon is studied. There will be also a park where the artifacts of the previous missions are protected, this will be named after the first man that stepped on the moon, it will be called the “Neil Armstrong Park”

With this game we also want to interest as many people as possible with what lunar and space exploration is. This is why we created two game modes, the novice mode for people with less experience and the advanced mode for people with more knowledge about robotics (for example people that had participated in FLL or similars). With this we want the more people to get involved so that in a future they can help in the construction of a lunar base.

Rules

  • The robot must start from the starting base and must get down from it using the ramp provided. The robot can’t get down using a different method.
  • The game is 5 minutes long. When the times finish, the robot is taken away and the score is counted.
  • The robots size cannot exceed the size of an A4 paper and must be built entirely from
    LEGO elements. There is no limit in the number of elements that can be used and the
    robot can have any number of sensors and motors, but just one NXT brick can be used.
    The robot must be carrying the Dexter Industries dSolar solar panel.
  • The robot’s wheels can’t touch the “Neil Armstrong Park” at any point of the hard
    game, if the wheels touch the area that will make loose points. In the easy game the
    wheels can enter the Park but can’t touch anything inside it like flags or the footprint of
    Armstrong.
  • In the novice mode the flags of the world are the only things that can enter to the
    Armstrong Park and in the advanced mode the flags can’t get passed the line that
    delineates the park.
  • The robot must complete the missions without any type of help from the team. In any
    case that that the robot needs to be touch 15 points will be discount. In the novice
    version 2 touches will be allowed before starting penalization and in advanced mode the
    penalization starts with the first touch.
  • In the missions that taking a photo is needed the robot must stop moving, make a
    camera shot sound (click) and show an image in the screen. This has to be done in
    the “Neil Armstrong Park photo” mission and in the “greenhouse plants information”
    mission.

Missions

Missions “advanced” mode

1) Photograph the Neil Armstrong Park:

a) Get near the park and take a photo of it (see rules). The robot can’t touch the park’s area.

b) 15 points for taking the photo

c) -25 points for touching the heritage area

2) Take water to the greenhouse:

a) Take the water tanks and move them to the irrigation area of the greenhouse

b) 20 points for crossing the high ridge with the water tanks

c) 20 points for leaving the tanks in the irrigation area

 

3) Bring plants, seeds and fruits from the greenhouse to the base

a) Take seeds, plants and fruits from inside the greenhouse and leave them in the base

b) 15 points for each plant. 2 in total (30 points)

c) 15 points for each seed. 2 in total (30 points)

d) 15 points for each fruit. 2 in total (30 points)

e) 15 extra points if at the end all 6 elements are in the base

4)Measure the plants and take information from them

a) Get to the greenhouse and measure and take information of a plant by taking a photograph (see rules)

b) 15 points for photographing and taking information of a plant

5) Entering to the greenhouse

a) The robot has to enter to the greenhouse via a smart door, the 2 gates of the door must open to enter the greenhouse. The robot can only enter once and exit once to the greenhouse using the smart door.

b) 15 points for using the smart door to enter and exit the greenhouse

c) -25 points for using the door more than once for entering or exiting the greenhouse

d) -20 points for not using the smart door

6) Place a pedestal with flags near the Neil Armstrong Park

a) Move a pedestal with flags from Chile, milkybots, a flag with all other team flags, Moonbots and Google lunar X Prize to the heritage area. The pedestal has to be on top of the black line that surrounds the park’s area, it can’t enter the park’s area

b) 20 points for leaving the pedestal

c) -25 points if touches the heritage area

  

7) Charge itself using the solar panel

a) Get on top of the high ridge and stay 5 seconds without moving for charging.

b) For each second of charging a musical note has to be played

c) The batteries have to be charged just once in the game

b) 15 points for charging using the solar panel

8) Get back to the starting base

a) Get back to the starting base and climb it to finish the game

b) 20 points for climbing to the base and finishing the game.

Missions “novice” mode

    1. Photograph the park:
        1. Get near the park and take a photograph (see rules) of it.
        2. 15 points for taking the photo

    2. Take water to the greenhouse:
        1. Grab the water tanks and leave them in the greenhouse
        2. 20 points for crossing the high ridge with the water tanks
        3. 20 points for leaving the tanks in the greenhouse.

    3. Bring seeds, fruits and plants from the greenhouse to the base
        1. Take seeds plants and fruits from the greenhouse to the starting base
        2. 15 points for each object (6 in total, 2 plants, 2 seeds and 2 fruits)
        3. 15 extra points if all 6 objects are in the base at the end of the game.

    4. Measure the plants and take information from them
        1. Get to the greenhouse and measure and take information of a plant by taking a photograph (see rules)
        2. 15 points for photographing and taking information of a plant

    5. Open the door (optional)
        1. Get to the greenhouse entrance and use the smart door to enter to the greenhouse
        2. The robot must use the door to exit the greenhouse
        3. 15 points for entering and exiting the greenhouse using the smart door

    6. Place a pedestal with various flags near the heritage
        1. Take the flags from the base to the top of the line that surrounds the park but without making them enter the park’s area
        2. 20 points for leaving the flag near the park

  1. Charge itself using the solar panel
      1. Get on top of the high ridge and stay 5 seconds without moving for charging.
        For each second of charging a musical song has to be played (the team choose the song)
      2. The batteries have to be charged just once in the game
      3. 15 points for charging using the solar panel

  2. Get  back to the base
    1. Get the robot back to the starting base
    2. 20 points for returning
